NUT FREE ZONE

We have a lot of enquiries about creating a nut free zone and clients looking for a sample letter to send to parents. What follows is a simple letter. Be careful about claiming that your service is totally nut free as nuts can enter your service through many means, on shoes and clothing etc. It is more advisable to say that you endeavour to create a nut free zone. It can never be 100% guaranteed and if a child or adult has a reaction this may expose you legally. A delivery person or post man or woman may have eaten a packet of nuts before delivering to you. Therefore, having signage up alerting all visitors to your efforts to keep children safe in this regard is highly recommended.

We also have medical care plans for children with allergies and a policy on such allergies available from our shop

SAMPLE LETTER

(Insert date)

Dear Parent

This letter is to inform you that (insert) is endeavouring to establish our service as a “nut-free-zone”. The reason for this decision is to protect children who have or may have (un-diagnosed) allergy to nuts. It has always been or goal to make the safety and well-being of your children our top priority.

It is important that there is strict avoidance to this food in order to prevent a life-threatening allergic reaction to children attending the service. Therefore, we are asking for your help, as parents, to help us provide children with a safe pre-school environment. Any exposure to peanuts/nuts may cause a life-threatening allergic reaction that requires emergency medical treatment. To reduce the chance of this occurring, we are asking that you do not send any peanut or nut containing products to the service with your child that will be eaten here. We ask you to check food labels carefully and If your child has eaten peanuts/nuts (or products containing nuts) before coming to (insert) please be sure your child’s hands and face have been thoroughly washed before entering (insert). Anaphylactic reactions can occur even if the child is within close proximity to the allergen.

We appreciate your cooperation as we work to maintain our service as a safe environment for all children. If, throughout the course of the year you have any questions or concerns about food-allergy-related issues, please do not hesitate to contact the me. We have a full policy on anaphylactic procedures If you wish to review it.

Wishing you and your family a safe and healthy school year. Please complete and return this form so we are certain you have received this information.

Yours sincerely,
